Purpose of the Role

The Head of Operations will provide strategic and operational leadership across all operations, ensuring the organisation operates safely, efficiently, compliantly and in line with best practice.

The post holder will translate strategic priorities into robust operational systems, strengthen consistency, and ensure Assisi makes effective and sustainable use of its staff and volunteer workforce as a core organisational resource.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership and Delivery

  • Provide leadership and oversight of day-to-day operations across all sites.
  • Ensure consistent operational standards, systems and procedures across sanctuary, retail and offices.
  • Oversee resource allocation, workflow planning and operational performance.

People, Volunteers and Workforce Management

  • Hold operational responsibility for staffing structures, rotas, workload balance and deployment.
  • Ensure volunteers are effectively integrated into operations as a strategic resource, not an ad-hoc support function.
  • Act as the senior operational interface with outsourced HR support.
  • Ensure HR policies, procedures and employment practices are implemented consistently.
  • Support managers with performance management, absence, conduct and change processes.

Health & Safety, Compliance and Risk Management

  • Hold organisation-wide operational responsibility for Health & Safety.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory health and safety requirements across sanctuary, retail, vehicles and outreach.

Legal, Contracts and Governance Support

  • Oversee operational compliance with legal obligations, including leases, contracts, insurance and licensing.

Infrastructure, Estates and IT Oversight

  • Oversee management of buildings, facilities, vehicles and equipment.
  • Co-ordinate maintenance, remedial works and contractor activity.
  • Provide operational oversight of IT systems, EPOS, data security and digital tools.

Change Management and Organisational Improvement

  • Lead operational delivery of organisational change, including restructures and service redesign.
  • Implement new systems, SOPs and ways of working.

Essential Criteria

  • Significant senior operational leadership experience in a complex organisation
  • Proven experience managing multi-site operations
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety, risk and compliance
  • Demonstrated experience leading organisational change
  • Ability to balance strategic oversight with practical delivery
  • Excellent leadership, judgement and communication skills

Desirable Criteria

  • Charity, public sector or regulated environment experience
